Of all the things I’ve wished to get out of my career in advertising, there’s one thing I’ve never let anyone know of. Until now. And that is, I’ve always secretly wanted to feature on someone’s desk. I can also settle for desktop, but preferably someone’s desk. The day someone reads an ad I’ve written twice (and not because it was shoved under their nose for a forced opinion but out of sheer choice) and takes the time out to cut it out and keep it aside to relook at it yet again, I’ll know I’ve lived a good, meaningless life.
But until that happens, I bring you instances of what currently feature on my desk. These are two of my favorite ads from the 2010 “Power of Ideas” campaign written by someone at Mudra. Now, since I’m not as good a copywriter as the person who wrote these ads, I can’t afford an iPhone or any of those other shmancy toys. So what I have looks like this.
Of these, the first one I’ve been able to source online, so you can read the copy. The second – the one I like better of the two – is nowhere to be found (except, maybe, at my desk). But I’ll try and put down the gist of it. It begins with something to the effect of “Some days, opportunity knocks. Other days, it breaks the door down with a sledge hammer”. The writer then goes on to draw comparisons between opportunity and that lady who relentlessly teases, and whose passions you’ve been vying to earn. And about how, at night, when you ask her to come up and look at your idea, she will. Given the fact you’re actually ballsy enough to invite her up in the first place.
I get I’m not really doing any justice to the ad right now, but I’ll repost the copy tomorrow and then you’ll know what I was talking about. Until then, read this and a few more here.

Here’s the copy of the second ad, as promised:
“Some days, opportunity knocks.
Some days, it breaks the door down with a sledgehammer.
But, most days, it just walks on by.
To a door down the street.
To a door that’s already open.
Opportunity isn’t an equal opportunity thing.
Opportunity is a shameless flirt.
It likes to be wooed and pursued.
It likes to play hard-to-get.
At evening’s end, if you say, “Want to come upstairs,
and see my idea?”, it will.
Few people know this about opportunity:
it goes to whoever comes up
with the most outrageous pick-up line.
It goes to the boldest among us -
the entrepreneur.”
